Five Easy Tips to Finally Start Your Closet Cleanout

Spring is the most popular time to refresh and make space around the home but we all know how challenging it is to get started. For this year’s Clean Out Your Closet Week, try out our five tips to get the job done:

Set the tone by putting on your favorite playlist, ask family members or roommates to join, or plan a reward if you stick with it for a certain time period. However you choose to have fun will help make your process more intentional and more thoughtful about what to donate, recycle, or toss.

If you haven’t worn or used something in the past year and it can be replaced for a low price (at your local Goodwill!), chances are you won’t regret parting with it. This simple rule helps you stay focused on what truly fits your current lifestyle.

Most of us discover duplicates during a cleanout: the second black cardigan, four pairs of skinny jeans, or yet another set of mugs. Think about how many you could ever use between laundry or dishwashing cycles, then choose your favorites and let the rest go.

There’s no single “right” way to purge. Some people work best room by room, while others find momentum by sorting all similar items at once. Whichever approach you choose, stick with it to make sure your room or category is diligently cleaned out.

Once you know what to get rid of, consider where things should go: Gently used items you could see yourself buy secondhand too can be donated to Goodwill to keep them out of landfills while supporting job training and education programs across Northwest Washington. Items that are worse for wear are best sent to recycling, while tossing should always be the last option.
