Tablescape Like a Grand Champion: 5 Secrets to a Show-Stopping Table
POSTED November 4, 2025 IN: Community

Hi friends! I’m Lisa Johnson, 2025 Washington State Grand Champion for tablescaping. Whether you’re hosting a cozy dinner or dreaming of blue ribbons, I’m sharing five tried-and-true tips to help you create a table that delights, charms, and maybe even wins a few hearts (and awards!).
1. Start with a Mood Board
Before you pull out the placemats, take a moment to dream. A mood board helps you visualize your theme—whether it’s “Autumn Enchantment,” “Retro Picnic,” or “Modern Minimalist.” Use Pinterest, magazine clippings, or even a sketchpad. This step keeps your ideas focused and your shopping list intentional.

Pro Tip: Don’t be afraid to mix textures and eras. A vintage teacup next to a modern charger? Yes, please!
2. Source or Create Unique Items That Spark Joy
The magic is in the details. Think handmade name cards, thrifted candlesticks, or DIY napkin rings. These little touches make guests feel special and give your table personality.

Budget-Friendly Idea: Visit your local Evergreen Goodwill for one-of-a-kind finds. You never know what treasures you’ll uncover!
3. Layer Like a Stylist
Tablescaping is all about depth. Start with a base (tablecloth or runner), add chargers, then plates, napkins, and centerpieces. Vary heights with candles, florals, or stacked books to keep the eye moving.

Playful Twist: Add something unexpected—like a tiny figurine or seasonal trinket at each place setting.
4. Let Color Lead the Way
Choose a color palette and stick to it. Monochrome can be chic, but complementary colors add vibrancy. Use your mood board to guide your choices and don’t forget to balance bold hues with neutrals.
Lisa’s Rule of Three: Pick three main colors—one dominant, one accent, and one neutral.

5. Practice the “Sit Test”
Before guests arrive (or judges peek!), sit at your table. Can you see across the centerpiece? Is there enough elbow room? Are the utensils placed comfortably? A beautiful table should also be functional.
Bonus Tip: Snap a photo! It helps you spot anything out of place and gives you a keepsake of your creation.

Tablescaping is part art, part heart. Whether you’re setting the table for friends or fair judges, remember: it’s not about perfection—it’s about connection. And when you source your pieces from places like Evergreen Goodwill, you’re not just creating beauty—you’re supporting job training, education, and sustainability in your community. Even better? When you gather your friends to create together, you tap into the power of the collective—making the process more joyful, more inspiring, and more meaningful. So grab your glue gun, hit up Goodwill, and let your creativity shine—for your guests and for good.
