Creative Expression through Secondhand Fashion: In Conversation with ThatsSoMavin
ThatsSoMavin has left his mark in the Seattle fashion scene through showcasing his unique, unapologetic personal style on social media platforms. We talked with ThatsSoMavin to delve into his world of thrifted fashion and uncover his various creative inspirations.
Finding a Passion for Thrifting
Evergreen Goodwill: Tell us about your history and experience with Goodwill.
ThatsSoMavin: Goodwill has been a part of my life from the start. I grew up in Hawaii and the Bay Area, in a family with an immigrant background. From a young age I would shop at Goodwill stores, swap meets, and thrift markets, so the concept of being frugal while still looking “presentable” was ingrained in my head very early on. Now, going to Goodwill with my friends and trying to find the coolest items we can get our hands on is not just a pastime, but truly a passion. I love sustainability and how that coincides with fashion.
Fashion Favorites and Inspiring Figures
Evergreen Goodwill: What are some of your favorite brands?
ThatsSoMavin: Currently, my favorite brands are Chrome Hearts, Fubu, Stussy, Carhartt, Issey Miyake, Doc Martens, Levi’s Strauss, Yohji Yamamoto… the list can go on and on.
Evergreen Goodwill: Who or what inspires your sense of style?
ThatsSoMavin: My sense of fashion stems from a variety of influences. I draw inspiration from Wisdom Kaye, Tyler the Creator, Biggie smalls, as well my close friends and family. Media also definitely influences my fashion, including anime and cartoons. I take inspiration from so many places because, growing up big and being told at a young age that I could never wear certain styles, I wanted to defy expectations and wear fashion that I was told would not be possible for me. Now, I’ve transformed that insecurity into a drive to love myself, and to dress the way that I want to without size being a limiting factor.
No one would or will ever stop me from expressing myself in the manner I want to, especially when it comes to fashion.
Hobbies Beyond Thrifting
Evergreen Goodwill: What are some of your hobbies outside of thrifting?
ThatsSoMavin: Outside of thrifting, my hobbies consist of digital creation—videos, short films, and photography—as well as drawing and cooking.
Nostalgic Home Aesthetics
Evergreen Goodwill: How would you describe your style in home décor?
ThatsSoMavin: When it comes to home décor, my style is mid-century modern. I love a good Togo couch and Herman Miller pieces. I also am a fiend for nostalgia, and love adding elements of my childhood into my home décor—anime or comics, video games, and even posters of iconic films.
Our Rare Finds pop-up series aims to highlight stories and experiences like ThatsSoMavin’s, where thrifting becomes more than shopping; it’s a chance to build community, embrace individuality, and support important initiatives.
