Thrifting at Evergreen Goodwill isn’t just shopping—it’s an adventure! The thrill of the hunt and excitement over uncovering unique finds is part of what makes the experience special. Whether you’re a seasoned thrifter or a first-timer, having a strategy can make all the difference. Here are some of our best practices and tips to help you thrift like a pro.

1. Go in with a Game Plan

Thrifting can be overwhelming if you don’t know what you’re looking for. Before heading to Goodwill, consider the following:

  • Are you looking for clothing, furniture, or home décor?
  • Do you need items for a specific occasion or project?
  • Are there particular styles or colors you want to focus on?

If you need inspiration to help you get started, Pinterest is a great place to start! You can follow us on Pinterest for more thrifting inspo: https://www.pinterest.com/EvergrnGoodwill/

2. Shop regularly and at the right times

Our stores restock often, so visiting regularly increases your chances of finding new treasures. Try to:

  • Shop early in the morning for freshly stocked items.
  • Visit midweek, as weekends are often busier, and inventory may be picked over.
  • Keep an eye out for seasonal promotions or special sales events. Follow us on our social pages or sign up for our text messages to stay up to date!

3. Learn the Store’s Color Tag System

Color tag sales happen every week at all of our stores (excluding the outlets), where a specific color tag goes on sale. Thursdays-Fridays the specified color tag, red, blue, pink, or green, will be 30% off, Saturdays-Sundays they’ll be 50% off and Mondays they’ll be $1.99.

Ask a staff member or look for signage to know which tags are discounted. You can also visit our sales & events calendar on our website to plan ahead.

4. Think Creatively

Thrifting is all about imagination! Don’t just look at items for their current state—consider their potential.

  • A long dress could be hemmed into a chic midi.
  • An old picture frame could become unique jewelry display.
  • Vintage dishes could elevate your kitchen aesthetic.

Approaching items with a creative mindset can turn a simple find into something extraordinary.

5. Dress for Success

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to try items on over your outfit to make sure it’s a good fit. Bringing a tape measure can also help you check the dimensions of furniture or clothing.

6. Stay Open-Minded

Sometimes, the best finds are the ones you didn’t know you were looking for. Be open to browsing different sections of the store—you might find a fabulous jacket in the men’s section or a stunning new wall clock in housewares.

7. Donate and Give Back

Goodwill thrives on donations, so consider bringing items you’re ready to pass along on your next visit. Your donations not only clear space in your home but also support Goodwill’s mission of providing FREE Job Training and Education programs to people in your community.
